Standing in Awe

The day I got married will always be one of the happiest days of my life. I still remember how my wife looked as she walked down the aisle, how in love we both were, and how happy we were as we both said, “I do.” It was a wonderful moment in my life and one I hope to always remember. Second to this moment are the days in which our children were born. The first child is always different simply because they are the first, but I truly cherish the moments as each of our children were born and I got to hold them in my arms.

More than likely, we all have moments like this that stand above the other moments and experiences in our lives. These are the moments that take our breath away. These are moments that are etched into our minds and that we cherish in our hearts. But while moments like this are truly breathtaking and the people moments like this often include are so special to us, there is someone more special and something more precious that should cause us to truly stand in awe.

Our God is an awesome God. These words are more than just the words of a song but are instead an expression of the wonder and majesty of our God. Repeatedly, the psalmists speak of just how awesome our God truly is. He is awesome (Psalm 47:2). His name is awesome (Psalm 99:3). His works and what He is doing is awesome (Psalm 66:1-5). Over and over again like in creation and even with the children of Israel by the Red Sea our God has continued to display His awesome self (Psalm 106:22).  If there is anything that should take our breath away and cause us to pause and stand in amazement it should definitely be our God. Without Him, none of the other great moments in our lives would even be possible.

There is not one moment in our lives that even comes close to comparing to what the Lord has done for us. God sent His Son (John 3:16). Jesus died for you and me (Romans 5:8).  He rose from the grave (Romans 6:4, 1 Peter 1:3). His death, burial, and resurrection provided us the way to have our sins washed away and to have the hope of heaven (1 Peter 3:21, 1 Corinthians 6:11, Colossians 1:3-7). We truly serve an awesome God. Like the psalmist said, let us stand in awe of Him (Psalm 33:8). Let us stand in awe of His Word (Psalm 119:161). Let us never forget how awesome our God is and let us prepare for His glorious return.
