Now, obviously this is not a real sales pitch and if it was it would actually be more honest than a lot of the other advertisements that you see every day. But why do ads like this work? I mean, if the ads did not draw people in then the advertisers and marketers would try something else, right? Ads like this play to the nature of mankind. People in general want the next new thing. When you mix that with the opportunity to spread their payments out over multiple months, which allows them to get it quicker and tricks their minds into thinking that it does not cost as much as it actually does, then they are more easily drawn in and are more likely to make a purchase.
So many people in life are drawn to the next new thing and because of this desire many have found themselves in financial ruin. Like bad financial decisions can lead us to financial ruin, bad spiritual decisions can lead us towards being lost forever.
In our world today so many people have taken the precious and perfect Word of God and have twisted, changed, and perverted the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In fact, this has happened so much that there are those in this world that do not know what to believe anymore. Now why has this happened? Well, I think it is obvious that the devil is involved with this. After all he “walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8). The devil knows the nature of man and he knows how to tempt us. But what does that say about us? James 1:14 tells us that “each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed.” The devil knows the selfishness that can plague the hearts of man. We want things our own way and usually we want it as soon as we can get it.
So, what happens when we want someone to give us a way out or teach us a new gospel? Paul, in Galatians 1:6-10 talks about the oneness of the Gospel and the fact that there is not another Gospel. He goes on to say in Galatians 1:8 that “even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed.” In various passages in scripture such as 2 Peter 2, all Christians are given warnings about false teachers to help prepare us for times like we see in our world today. There are going to be false teachers, and there are going to be people that want to listen. In fact, some people are going to want to listen so badly that they will get to the point that they will “not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.” (2 Timothy 4:3-4).
As Christians we are not to be the kind of people that are turned away by every new thing that is said, and we are definitely not to go out seeking to find a new and trendier gospel. The cost of a decision like that will be our soul. Instead, we need to stay true to His Word and the Gospel of Jesus Christ and proclaim it boldly everywhere that we go.
