Just recently I saw an article about Elon Musk. He recently became the world’s richest man with a net worth of 188 billion dollars. That is more money than we can imagine! However, the article I ended up reading was not about Musk’s future plans for inventions or stock market investments, nor was it about how he would give it to charities or donate his wealth to research. The article’s title read, “Elon Musk, now the world’s richest person, is selling all his possessions so people know he is serious about colonizing Mars.” Upon seeing the title, some thoughts popped into my head.
The thought of “leaving Earth to live somewhere else” came to mind first. As a man who loves everyday life and the created things on Earth, the immense amount of change in moving to an entirely different planet is very frightening. I couldn’t imagine moving from earth! However, we know that when we pass on from this life, our souls will indeed leave earth. Depending on how we stand in God’s eyes, that too may be a frightening experience as well. James 4:14 says, “yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.” Our lives on earth are but a vapor compared to the rest of time, so I would suggest always being prepared for Jesus’ return to Earth.
My other thought was, “Am I truly serious about my dedication to Christ?” In the aforementioned article, Musk’s goal is to have “basically almost no possessions with a monetary value” so he can put as much of his money as he can into funding a colony on Mars. Musk is serious, as evident in his selling of most of his real estate properties across California as of this writing. Are you serious about Christ? What about following Him? It is a big commitment, but the colony already established in heaven is a wonderful place to be.
