Better Than I Deserve

Picture this situation. You ask someone, “How are you?” and they reply with “I’m better than I deserve.” Think about what it may have taken for that person to say that without thinking about it.

Can you honestly say that you are, “better than I deserve”? If you are victimized by a tongue that could shoot off faster than Chuck Connors in The Rifleman, you may say that you aren’t. Maybe you don’t feel that way because you have worked a toiling job for many years and not reached the ever increasing retirement age. Or, you may be enduring a boatload of trouble.

What would it take for you do be “better than I deserve” without thinking about it? What if you had your dream vehicle? Would all your money predicaments need to be resolved? Is being perfectly healthy your answer? Will never having to worry about anything again solve this problem for you? Your answer may fall into one of these categories, but if so, it is in the “earthly” category.

I like the big checks they hand the winner of a stockcar race or golf tournament, but, to be “better than I deserve, I need the “big check” Jesus gave when he died on the cross (Romans 5:6-10). Verse 8 states, “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Receiving the Lord’s loving gift makes us worthy of the blessing of Aaron in Numbers 6:24-26. It may open up an avenue for like it did me. “The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.” The freedom from sin purchased with the undeserved blood of Jesus should be reflected in the peace we have because we are better than we deserve.
